August 27 Thursday

Rachel and I got into Maui at about 11:00 am. Went to Costco and stocked up on food and went to the condo. When we got to the condo we found the door open and two cleaning people inside. One in the kitchen cleaning another sitting on the couch. We did not think anything about it until Rachel remembered that they were not suppose to be cleaning the place between Jodie and our stays. So, we went in and tried to talk to the lady cleaning the kitchen to explain this. We found when we tried to talk to the lady that she did not speak any English only Spanish. So, Rachel call Terri and the cleaning lady called one of her friends as a translator for her. After the idea that she was not suppose to be here cleaning got across, we found that she had thrown out all of the food that was left for us in the refrigerator, including the Terri's expense liquor. Then after about 10 minutes the other cleaning person in the house came back with a bunch of plastic bags full of all the food and liquor that was thrown out. He said that all the stuff was sitting in his car. After they gave us the food they left. The place was still torn apart because the lady was in the middle of cleaning, so we did the best we could to put it all back together. Still today we do not know what was missing.

After we drop off our stuff in the condo and got something to eat we saw that is was already 2:00 pm and Kathy's flight was landing at 2:10 pm. So, we got in the car and started driving. Right when we were just on the highway Kathy called to say that she had just landed. We picked her up came back to the condo and went for a walk on the beach. We started on Kamaole II and walked to the end of Kamaole I. After the walk we decided to go to happy hour at Moose McGillycuddy's. Then went back to the condo, had diner, and unpacked and went to bed.

September 1 Tuesday

Went to the Maui Humane society (Pooh factory) and looked at the dogs, cats, pigs, and baby bunnies. We ask to look at one dog named Lava. Lava was a female Catahoula and Whippet mix. She was really shy, she looked as though she was beaten by her last owner (very sad.) She was found in a field with another stray Grover. When we took Lava into the private pavilion at first she just stood in the corner next to the gait where the caretaker placed her. Then after about 15 minutes she got comfortable enough to walk around next to the walls. A couple of time when Lava passed Rachel sitting next to wall Rachel could reach her arms out and pet her. Then after a while Lava started to like Rachel petting her and would walk up to her and sit next to her and wall and get petted.

Drove down to La Perouse Bay, the southern tip of the island, and took little walk on the trail to the dolphins. The whole walk we were looking for dolphins, but we did not see any. The trail was kind of hard to walk, mostly with our sandals on. The most exciting thing that happened was when we left the parking area driving back to the condo. 5 minutes into the drive, Rachel spotted a Jackson Chameleon on the road. Rachel slammed on the brakes and stopped the car screaming "Chameleon, Chameleon!! Do you see it!" She jumped out of the car, ran out into the road and grab the poor thing and brought it back into the car. Rachel handed me the Chameleon (more like through it) to me and took off down the road. How excited she was you would have thought she won the lottery. Rachel never thought twice about bring the Chameleon back to the condo. And on the way back to the condo we named him Louie. Louie was an adult male Jackson Chameleon a little on the skinny side.

We took Louie to our condo and set him up on the seven foot fake tree. While he was crawling around on the tree we did some research and found out that the Jackson Chameleon were introduced to the island in 1980s. We also found out that allot of Jackson's have been found dead on the island from dehydration. So, we found out they only drink from water droplets on the leaves of plants. There were not pool drinkers. So, we got a cup of water and a paper towel and dripped water on the leave in front of him. He went crazy drinking up the water. He seemed really thirsty! We dripped water all over on the leaves for him for the next 2 hours. After doing more research we found that Jackson's Chameleons are from middle hight of mountainous regions with high humidity and lots of rain. So, we went looking for a place on the island that fix that description and we found the Iao Valley in the West Maui Mountains. So, we decided to drop Louie off there tomorrow.

At about sundown we realized that we needed to find a place for the little guy to sleep. He could not sleep on the tree because it might get down and we might lose him. We figured the place for him was in the shower tub. We found two small fake bushes and placed them in the bath tub. When we went out to move him to his bed, he was sitting all curled up in to a little ball at the end of a branch in front of the back windows. His tail was curled into a perfect spiral and his body was scrunched up to make him look fatter.

After a little bit of poking Louie, to wake him up, he finally got on my finger and we placed him on the bush in the shower. At first he walk from one to the next and then would get to the end of one of the branches and with his back legs on the end of a branch he would rise and lower his arms separated like in a praying motion at the side of the tub. We hoped he would not fall though out the night. We then decided to leave the lights on for a little while for him to get acquainted with his environment and after about 20 minutes we said good night to the little guy and shut off the lights.

September 2 Wednesday

We woke up in the morning and checked on Louie in the shower. He was asleep on the little plant that we placed in there for him. We got ready and grabbed Louie and jumped in the car and drove to Iao Valley. The whole way Louie sat on my finger praying. The praying position was with his to hind legs on the back of my index finger and his front two hands together pointing straight ahead. When we got to Iao Valley Rachel took Louie and tried to hold him in a way that other would not be able to see him. We walked around the whole park looking for the best place to let him start his new life. We found a spot down by a little creek where we though might get a lot of rain and no people. I took Louie from Rachel. She said her goodbyes and I went off the trail for about 50 feet and found a good area that had plants with leaves I thought Louie could drink from. I took him and placed him on a long looking bambo looking trunk and said goodbye and left. It was really sad leaving the little guy. We were already attached to him from only one night. Well, Rachel was attached to him from the first minute. We still miss him.

That night we booked our trip to Oahu for the Wednesday the 9th. We got a discounted ticket of 50 dollars round trip per person. We thought that was a good deal.

September 3 Thursday

In the morning I booked windsurfing lessons for tomorrow. We then drove to Makawao to see what Rachel thought was a cowboy town. It was a small run down town with a few shops. We did see anything interesting, so we did not stop. We just went through it and went to Paia. In Paia we parked and walked through the shopping district. We went into the Mano market (Vegetarian store) and bought some stuff and a big chocolate chip and coconut cookie (It was good.) Rachel thinks that the Mano Market is the best Vegetarian store she has ever seen. I think she want to move to Paia now. Then we left Paia and drove to Costco. We always stop at Costco when we are in this part of the island. We got 4 sweet tasting pineapples for later.

September 4 Friday

Took my first windsurfing lesson at HST windsurfing at the Kahului Bay (the beach near the airport.) I really enjoyed the lesson. I felt like I got really far in learning how to windsurf, but there is a long way to go from here. After windsurfing we had lunch there at the beach, where I found I needed to relax. I found that windsurfing can really wear one out. That is when we found that the pillow from the back of the blue chair was missing.

In the afternoon we went to the Maui Prince Hotel beach. We did not go into the water. We only set up our chairs and read for about an hour or two. After about two hours we saw that a wedding was going on down the beach. So, we decided to leave so that we did not ruin their picture. We decided that whenever we see a wedding at a public area we will get out of the way as much as we can, because our wedding was in a public area and we had the nicest people that stayed out of our way.

Below is the windsurfing review that I wrote up and posted on all the review websites that I could find for HST.

Review

I found that the instruction of the course was taught in the best way imaginable. The instructor (Neil) would go over a few techniques on the beach and then let the student test them out in the water. When the student was trying out the technique the instructor was right there on the shore pointing out suggestions. I found that the instructor paid enough intention to tell when the student was ready to move on to the next technique, and when the student need to be re-shown an older technique. By the end of the lesson I was windsurfing out and back from the shore without getting off the board. I could not ask for anything more.

When booking the reservations I found the person I talked to to be very informed and helpful. I plan to book with them again before I leave from my vacation. I attended my lesson on September 9, 2009.

September 5 Saturday

Today I booked two more windsurfing lessons for Monday the 8th (Labor day) and Friday the 11th. I purchased the three lessons package deal 7 1/2 hours for $229. I am really sore from yesterdays lesson, but by Monday I hope to be over it. In the morning we went out to La Perouse Bay (The Southern point of the island) and walked out about a mile and a half. We found an octopus when looking at the tide pool from the low tide. It looked to be dead at first, but Rachel said she saw it move. So, I found a stick and Rachel found a rock and she moved it into the tide water. The octopus did not move when we placed it in the water, but we were still not sure if it was dead or not. So, we left to walk more on the trail to check on it later on the way back. While on the trail we must have saw at least 200 black goats walking around us (Rachel was scared of them, like all hooved animals.) Then we turned around at the beginning of the black peninsula. On the way back we looked for the octopus was it was not there. We are not sure if it swam away, got eaten, or got push out by the tide. I think it swam away.

We went to look at the house that Terri and Gary plan on purchasing and the model was not open.

Went the shaved ice shop in the Kukui shopping center. I got a pink bubble gum and pineapple favors with ice cream on the bottom with mochi balls. Rachel got the same with different favors. We both like ours, but we agreed we like just ice cream better.

Then we went to Wailea Beach, it was really winding and hot. We stayed about an hour and left. While there we saw two scraggly Myna birds that we had to feed. Their necks feathers looked as though they were eaten by bugs. Being there just reminded me that my favorite close beach is Maui Prince Beach.

September 6 Sunday

In the morning we went to the Wailea Beach to snorkel. We went snorkeling on the left part of the beach where the cliffs are. When we first got in we saw a bunch of big puffer fish. A little past the opening waters we saw an small snake like eel. Further in we saw about three more eels and different colored Humm fish than we normally see. After about half way out to the end of the cliffs Rachel commented on seeing Jelly Fish and after every now and then I could see little flecks of Jelly Fish floating in the water. Then when swimming out past the cliffs Rachel saw a large group of Jelly fish and we turned around and headed back to shore. On the way back in right before I was close enough to stand up I felt my lips and chin get stung by Jelly Fish. It was not a bad sting, but it was a Jelly Fish sting. After getting out of the water and walking around Wailea Hotel for a while Rachel touched her lips and felt as though she was stung by a Jelly Fish also by the resado on her hands.

In the afternoon we drove to Kapalua beach (our last trips favorite beach) to sit and read for a while. But first on the way we will stop at the Pooh Factory (not really on the way.) We walked through and said hi to all the dogs and noticed that Ziggy was gone. Ziggy was our favorite dog from the last time we came. Lava was still there and she seemed to be a little more friendly. She would stand at the fence when nobody was around but when someone came over to say hi she would stand back. When her roommate moved from the front of the enclosure Lava would run away to the back also. It seemed she used her roommate as a comfort barrier.

Then on the way to Kapalua Beach it started to rain, but we decided we would be fine under an umbrella. It stopped raining when we first got to the beach to setup. Once setup one little pigeon came flying over and Rachel through him a piece of pretzel. Then about 10 to 15 pigeons came flying over. It took us about 15 minutes of not eating or moving much for most of them to go way. Then when we had about 5 pigeons left near us a pigeon with one leg mangled walked over. Rachel had to feed it and then we got more pigeons flighting back then we had before. They kept jumping up on Rachel's chair and sitting on my feet. After about an hour of sitting and reading we started to get attached by ants and decided to leave. Maybe this beach is not our favorite this trip.

On the way back to the condo we stopped and eat at Maui Tacos.

At night we had a gecko hunt and Rachel won with 18 and I only had 10. I think she is cheating.

September 7 Monday

This morning I am doing my second windsurfing lesson. Today was the first day that I woke up without being sore from my last lesson. I hope this one goes well and I learn to control the board more.

The windsurfing lesson went great. I jumped on the board and could go back and forth from the shore to about 50 meters out without falling. I felt a lot more stable on the broad and controlling the sail. The new things a learn from this lesson were the jibing and starting with the sail in my hands. Jibing is turning the board around down wind. Jibing, which as it turned out, was easier then tacking (turning up wind), but jibing put you further down wind on the beach. So to much jibing led to long walks back up the beach. The other trick that I learned was starting sailing with the boom in your hands. This trick was not that hard either, but I only did it two times. I will have to practice this last trick some more the next lesson.

I found that after you learn how to windsurf you do not have to work as hard. I was not as wore out this time as last time. I think it was because I was not climbing on the board the whole time or fighting with the sail as much. Neil (the instructor) finally got me to stand the right way on the board. Once I learned how to stand correctly I could just lean back on the sail and I did not have to pull as much. Also during the lesson a Maui news paper reporter was there taking pictures of me and Neil and she told Rachel that I might be in the news paper.

After windsurfing we went to Sugar Beach and had lunch and read for a while. During lunch we feed a little mouse who kept jetting out of the rocks. Rachel wanted to catch him and take him home. What doesn't she want to take home.

September 8 Tuesday

We slept in through the morning and in the afternoon we went tide pooling at the rocks between Kamaole III and Kamaole II. Rachel found a little tiny hermit crab that she wanted to kept, but what is new.

In the afternoon we went for a drive around the North side of the West Maui Mountains. So, we started on the 30 highway pass Lahaina. The road was great all the way past the blow hole until we hit Kahakuloa. At Kahakuloa the road turned into a one lane road. This was one lane with no shoulder or room for another car to pass. To make the road even worse it was on the side of a cliff with on rail. This type of road lasted about 15 miles. Rachel was driving and she got behind a car and used it as a buffer the whole rest of the way around. Once around we stopped at Costco to return some extra food.

After the north coast trip, we went to Big Beach to eat lunch, swim, and read a while. This day the waves were really big. The size of the waves could have been because it was high tide.

It is always fun to watch people get wipe out on that beach. I feel it is the same really people watch NASCAR. The waves at Big Beach always come out of nowhere. Most of the time at Big Beach there are small little wave, but about once every 10 minutes a huge waves come out of nowhere. There is not only just one wave that comes out of nowhere there are usually about 2 to 3 waves in a row. The people in the water are just floating along watching the beach when wham they get wipe out.

Tonight we are getting packed for our trip to Oahu.

September 9 Wednesday

So, we got up at 5:10 am and went to the airport for our trip to Oahu. We got into Oahu at about 9:00 am and we got our rental car. We ask the salesmen if we could upgrade our car and he said choose any of the cars out here and it would be a 6 dollars extra charge. So, we choose a Seabring convertible. Rachel really like driving the car and she found out she does like convertibles (which might be scary.) First we went to the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. We heard that it could be an 4 hour wait so we were prepared. We went and got in line to get our tickets for the boat ride and we got ticket for a trip at 10:00, which was only 45 minutes from when we got the tickets. So, we went over to were you wait in line for the boat and a park ranger came over and asked us when our tickets were for and then gave us earlier tickets for 9:45. So, we did not have to really wait at all, which was really nice.

After the Arizona Memorial we got in the car and tried to drive to the Diamond Head scenic view. I got a little lost and told Rachel the wrong directions, but we still made it. From there we went to Hanauma bay, which was really beautiful. We would have liked to go snorkeling there, but Rachel was worry about hurting her nose. Then we got back in the car and drove around the island. We saw a lot of poor areas and a lot of nice beaches. We stopped at a Macadamia nut factory outlet, which gave us free samples. Score! Then we kept driving about the island and after about a couple of hours we decided to stop at a pull out right before North Shore. It was a kind of like a permeate tide pool. We could walk around on the rocks and shallow water and see fish. It was a nice stop. Then we got back on the road and head back down to Honolulu and on the way stopped at the Dole Pineapple Plantation. At the Plantation we got a snack of a waffle cone of Dole pineapple whip and a Dole pineapple whip float. We both loved our treats.

When walking around we found that the plantation had a human maze. We went to purchase a ticket at the start of the maze, but no one was at the gate. After noticing that they closed in an hour and that the maze would take longer then an hour, Rachel pulled me passed the gate. We ran around for a while and noticed that it was not really a maze. The goal of the "maze" was to find all the stamp stations and then exit the way you came in. Once we found that out we tried to find our fastest way out, but then we could not find our way back. We came upon a part of the maze the had a gate that opened to a pond next to the snack shop. The gate was locked, but we snuck around it. After the maze we went though the gift shop and then left.

After the Dole plantation we went to the Waikiki Beach. I just wanted to see it because I have heard so much about it. We drove down through the Waikiki Beach and was disappointed. The beach was only a bunch of tall hotels and the hotel were not special at all. It was like a plain Las Vegas strip.

After Waikiki Beach we went and dropped off the car and went to the airport at about 7:00 pm. We were hoping that we could change our flight to an earlier one. When we got to a Hawaiian Airlines teller they said it would be a 30 dollar charge per person. That was crazy because our flight was only 25 dollars. After the flight we got home and fell into our bed.

September 10 Thursday

Went to the Pooh factory to see Lava. Then went and sat at the Maui Prince Hotel Beach (our favorite Beach.) We found that we can feed the crabs bird seed. When we were leaving Rachel picked up here beach chair and found that she had a crab under the back rail. Then Rachel spent the next 5 minutes terrorizing the crab trying to catch it. She caught it and wanted to take it home. I wonder what our house would look like if she took all the animals she caught home.

September 11 Friday

Had my third and last windsurfing lesson. Rachel and I thought I had a lot of improvement from my last lesson. I could sail straight out from the shore and back to the same spot or even further up wind. During one of my first trips down wind I was just starting to turn and round and head back to shore and all the sudden a sea turtle pop up right in front of me and I had to turn the board as fast as possible to not run into him. The turtle was very colorful and large. After this lesson as was almost as worn out as the first lesson. This could have been because I did not get as many breaks from falling in the water.

Then we went to Wailea Hotel to see if we could get into their pool complex. Once we got there we saw that we had the wrong colored wrist ban on. Then we went down to Maui Prince Beach. Rachel and I went swimming in the water and eat lunch and read until about 5:00 pm. The beach was really nice. We had overcast skies the whole day, so it was nice and cool and really beautiful.

We always feed the sparrows and the red headed birds, but we recently found that we can feed the crabs on the beach. After one day of throwing bird seed out for the sparrows we started to see the crabs coming out and grabbing the seed and running back into their holes.

In the evening we went to Maui Tacos and I got chips, salsa, and a soda (it was nice.) At night we watch the "Dead like me" movie. The movie was a disappointment. It did not have the same theme as the shows. It was also missing two major characters.

September 12 Saturday

We slept in through the morning, and then went to Maui Prince Hotel beach for good lunch viewing and reading. When we got there we noticed that the water was really far in. We sat down our chairs to the right of a fallen tree under some over hanging shade. Even as far back as we were the water came all the way up to us. There were a couple of times that we got hit by some big waves and our buts got really wet. We were not worried because we were in a bathing suits. The whole time we were at the beach we had overcast skies, but that was fine because we really like it that way because that is the only time the beach in not unbearably hot. After about an hour of sitting there it started to sprinkle, so we just threw our towels over us and had lunch, but after about and hour of off an on sprinkles the rain started to come down hard. We were not the only people still at the beach at this time. There was a group to our right of 5 or 6 people that I would like to call the hippie family. There was two children a boy and a girl about 5 or 6 years old. 2 guys with guitars about 30 years old. 3 girls, one girl was about 25 and the others were about 40. They brought their dog, a black Labrador that acted like a puppy, but could have been older. The children were playing in the sand with the tide and the rest of the family was standing in a somewhat circle playing guitars and singing. I think they were singing, it could have been they were talking really loud over the guitars. When it started to rain the group did not seem to mind, the guys grabbed towel and wrapped their shoulder and kept playing away. The children did not care about the rain at all they were already soaked from playing in the tide. But like us when the rain started to really come down they packed it up and left.

In the evening we went to Wailea Hotel and walked the board walk. We saw part of the best luau (Rachel did some research) on the Island and watched one of the best sunset we have ever seen. It was a really nice walk. During our first walk in front of the hotel we saw a wedding party getting there pictures taken on the far side of the beach. The bride was in her full white dress and the groom and the groomsmen were all in nice black tuxedos. There as a photographer with a camera stand taking pictures. We were shocked to see, all around the wedding party were beach goers not part of the wedding party. On the right of them a few feet away was a guy laying out on his towel getting a tan and on the left a couple doing the same. Also in the water in front of the group was an older man swimming in the ocean. Rachel and I were really shocked that none of the people on the beach gave the wedding party any room. Remembering our wedding at a public glacier look out, we were happy that the people there were so nice to give us some room.

When we were walking back across the hotel we notice that the wedding party was back out on the beach again with the beach goers all around them again, but when we got closer we noticed that the wedding couple was different then the one we saw before. How many weddings a day does this place have?

After the sunset walk we went to Maui Tacos and I had chips and salsa for diner. My favorite!

September 13 Sunday

Today we went first to Big Beach and sat on the beach and then went to Maui Prince Beach for the rest of the day. When we first got to Big Beach after we set up our chairs in the usual spot, I run over to the water to jump in. Then at first when I tried get out past the tide, I found I could not. There were a set of big waves coming in, where I could not go out with out getting wiped out. So, I kept taking a couple of steps into the tide and the walk back out when another big wave started to come in. Then after doing this for about 5 waves the shore settled down. While I was waiting a thought went thought my head "was this to rough to go out in." But I convinced myself that it was only that I have not been here for a while and the waves were not that big. Once I was out in the water there were only little waves, but I was watching them. Then after about 5 minutes a saw a big wave starting so I just slowly started to walk towards it. Then I saw that the wave kept getting bigger and I started to kind of run toward the it. Then I saw that the wave was not growing any more but starting to break! So, I got as close as I could and dived under it the best I could. I thought when I was diving that I was close enough so that I would not feel the effects of it, but I was wrong. I was in a perfectly straight dive pose under the wave and it was pulling me all over. I was not wipe out, but that was close. Then when I came up from that wave I looked out into the ocean and saw another of the same size. I started to run at it. Well the water was about waist high, so me running at it did not get me very far. Then this wave as crashing early too, so I dive as close as I could to get under the wave and wham I was hit with it. I was not too bad, but I was turned and spun around. I felt the power of the wave and decided it was time for me to get out. I popped my head up and looked back and saw another one coming. I was going to try to get out far enough so I would not be hit from the full power of it. Then I saw that I was not getting out fast enough and prepared to get hit by it. The wave crashed about 5 feet behind me and I prepared to fall on my back and lay straight. Then wham it hit me and I as turned all around and run into the floor. Then I jumped up and started to run out of the water. Then I got out of the water Rachel waves me over and says "I though you would have been smart enough to get out when it was this strong." I sat down in my beach chair next to Rachel breathing really hard and thought, "I thought I was also."

After about an hour sitting and reading at Big Beach we decided it was to hot and left to got to Maui Prince Beach (our favorite.) When we got there we notice the tide was really high on the beach like yesterday when we came. So we went to our spot we usually sit at, (to the left of the downed tree) and set up camp. As we were setting up, I spotted out to Rachel that the tide was already coming up to our chairs, but we stayed anyways. When the first wave came up to our chair Rachel notice this was not like the last time we came, this time Rachel was not wearing her bathing suit. Because she was not wearing her bathing suit she had to stand up each time a wave came up to us to not get her but wet. The main problem was that waves were coming up to us about every 2 minutes, so she had to keep her eyes on the tide. After about 15 minutes of Rachel stand up and sitting down a big wave came in and really hit us good. Then we saw that Rachel's sandals had been swept out with the wave. So, I handed Rachel my book and ran out into the water and fished them out. After that we put our sandals up on the top of the beach and more the cooler we had brought so it would not get taken. Then about 5 minutes later another wave hit us and this time the cooler was pulled back with the tide. After fishing it out we decided to find higher ground.

September 14 Monday

Our last day in Maui. We have a flight at 12:10 pm to LAX. Well that is what we think when we get up. While I am getting ready Rachel checks the airport to see if our flight has been delayed. We normally did not check the flight before we got to the airport, but last time we were in Maui our flight back was change to 4 hours early than it was first scheduled. Which we missed and had to go through hell to get home. Guess what this time it was pushed 3 hours ahead. The flight was not scheduled three hours ahead it was estimated to leave 3 hours ahead. So, we did not know what that meant so I called the airlines and the lady I talked to said that the plane could still leave at 12, 1, or 2 o'clock. So, we still have to be there at the same time but just wait there for three hours. By this time we were already taking our time because we thought we would not have to be there until 2:00, but then we realized that the rental car still had to be back at the same time, which was 11:03. It was 10:40, and we were about a half hour from the airport. We did our checks that we did not leave anything and took off. On the way we remembered that we needed to get gas before the turn the car in. There goes more time. On the whole way up I am reading the rental agreement to see how much we were going to be charged. So, we find a gas station and get gas. 11:05, we are hoping they well be nice and let us off. we are almost to the airport and we notice that the gas gage is not reading full. So, we decided we can just show them that we filled up by the recite we got. I go to look at the recite and it was blank. It did not print correctly. We are sure we are going to be charged about 50 dollars for the gas and the late fee. Then right before we get the rental car place, the meter registers full. When we check the car in they did not charge us any extra fees. So, we wait for the extra three hours for the plane and fly home.
